Growing up is realizing Happy wasn't a villain in Blue Chips

Just rewatching this now and

I remember doing a persuasive speech in middle school arguing that college athletes should be financially compensated for money they make the schools. I'm just rewatching Blue Chips this Thanksgiving morning and realizing Happy wasn't a total piece of shyt and that we were arguing for the same shyt


Happy was a greedy scumbag but he was ahead of the curve

If I recall, he was a booster who got caught breaking the rules. He was just trying to justify breaking the rules to the coach.

Breaking those rules jeopardized the eligibility of the player, and the team's record and chance at a title run. And knowing that, booster broke the rules anyway.

They have a conversation later in the movie where Happy reminds Pete that the he (the booster) didn't break the rules providing the money, Pete broke the rules by taking it and getting caught.

Im being mildly facetious with this thread but it is interesting that the conversation I posted is Happy basically telling Pete the players should be eligible to receive compensation the same way Pete is for his contract, media appearances, etc. It's basically arguing for the NIL that finally and rightfully exists today for college players. They have people like Ed O'Bannon to thank for paving the way for these kids making bank in college today.


Happy was still a sleazy piece of shyt though
