Greg Hardy signs one-year deal with Cowboys

It took eight days, but the best pass rusher on the open market finally has a new deal.

Per a league source, defensive end Greg Hardy has signed with the Cowboys.

It’s a one-year contract, which carries the minimum base salary for a sixth-year player of $745,000. He can earn up to a total of $13.1 million (which was his base salary as Carolina’s franchise player in 2014) through a series of per-game roster bonuses, incentives, and a large workout bonus.

The Cowboys chose to keep the base salary as low as possible in the event that another incident or accusation against Hardy puts him back on the Commissioner’s-Exempt list for all or part of the 2015 season. The thinking is that the Cowboys would only owe him game checks and not per-game roster bonuses if he’s suspended with pay.

At last check, the league had not resolved the question of whether a player would be entitled to per-game roster bonuses and other items of compensation tied to playing in games while on the Commissioner’s-Exempt list. Either the NFL and NFLPA have agreed that a player on the Commissioner’s-Exempt list gets salary only or the Cowboys are preparing for that eventuality.

It’s also possible that the contract contains specific language in which Hardy waives his right to anything except base salary, if placed on the Commissioner’s-Exempt list. If the NFL and NFLPA have yet to resolve that question, it’s presumably a topic that player and team could negotiate on their own.

Cowboys agree to deal with Hardy

The Dallas Cowboys and defensive end Greg Hardy have agreed to a one-year, $11.3 million deal that could be worth up to just over $13 million, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Pro Football Talk was first to report the deal.

Hardy and the Cowboys have had ongoing negotiations, and he stayed overnight in Dallas before his scheduled physical, which took place Wednesday morning.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had been pursuing Hardy as well but pulled out of the running Wednesday.

"At the end of the day, we didn't feel good about it," general manager Jason Licht told the Tampa Bay Times.

Hardy, 26, was a 2013 Pro Bowl selection after leading the Carolina Panthers with 15 sacks, tying a team single-season record.

Carolina placed the franchise tag on Hardy in February 2014, guaranteeing him $13.1 million for the season. On May 13, he was arrested and charged with assaulting and threatening to kill ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder.

A Mecklenburg (North Carolina) County judge found Hardy guilty on July 15. The verdict was set aside when Hardy requested a jury trial.

All charges were dropped on Feb. 9 because Holder refused to cooperate with the district attorney's office after receiving a financial settlement from Hardy.

Hardy was placed on the inactive list before the second game this past season and the commissioner's exempt list before the third game until his domestic violence case was resolved.

Although the charges were dropped, Hardy remains on the exempt list as the NFL conducts its own investigation into whether he violated the league's personal conduct code. He is eligible to sign with a team while he's on the exempt list.

There has been media speculation within the past week that Hardy could be suspended anywhere from one or two games to six. The league has the option of suspending him for more than six if officials feel there was enough evidence from his domestic violence case to warrant such a penalty.

The Panthers drafted the former Ole Miss standout in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. Hardy started 39 games between 2011 and 2013. He has 34 career sacks.

Smh don't like that it's only a 1 year. Would have at least liked a team option for a 2nd year.

Whatever. He will see how bright the future is in Dallas and will reup next year.

Now just resign Rolando McClain and draft the next 1200 yard rusher.

“The court is entirely convinced Hardy is guilty of assault on a female and communicating threats.”
