Again no disrespect to Nolan
but coach Thompson changed The fabric of basketball as a whole when he got to Georgetown, pro basketball was playing their NBA finals on tape delay like three days later as he built Georgetown University & the Big East Into the most dominant college basketball conference of all time which sparked the NBA where as they say the rest is history
this makes absolutely no sense...Why are you conflating College Basketball with what the NBA did? Last I checked Larry, Jordan, Stern, and Magic were the ones responsible for the NBA not being on Tape delay anymore...The fukk does John Thompson have to do with that?

The only difference between Richardson and Thompson is that one did it in the Big East with its media machine and the other did in the middle of nowhere

imma go with Richardson .
Like others said his influence is still out here

u young dudes .... magic, larry & stern were all part of the NBA - during the tape delay finals on CBS

Greater Impact on Basketball? Nolan Richardson II or John Thompson II

but anyways - this is the title of your thread ....
and again, early 80’s Georgetown/the Big East conference, change the nation into basketball as being a top 3 sport behind baseball & football

I'm from where Petey come from
What does any of that have to do with actual play calling and innovation on the basketball court though?

Muthafucca :scust:you said greater impact on basketball and everything that I mention about John Thompson lends to his lasting legacy on the game of basketball. I didn’t even mention that he is THE FIRST Black Man to win a D-I Nat’l Title. That’s not to take anything away from the great Nolan Richardson. Next time just create a thread saluting the great Nolan Richardson :stopitslime:

"1986 was the last year that CBS ever aired an NBA playoff game on tape delay. The network's final delayed playoff broadcast was Game 3 (on May 16) of the playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets."

Again, Georgetown won the chip in '84 so I fail to see how them winning a chip in '84 has anything to do with CBS airing its last NBA game on tape delay in '86. And to your last point, that is more of a function of the big east conference media hype..Take a closer look at John Thompsons record and his actual career...I dont see where he had that much of an impact on the game of basketball besides marketing

Yes, I said BASKETBALL not marketing...Dont get me wrong, John Thompson was great, but Nolan had a greater impact on the actual game given the resources that he had to work with and the innovativeness of 40 minutes of hell.

when did i mention Georgetown national championship vs the NBA finals on tape delay ?

and for the record (in the very beginning of the 1980’s) ..... John Thompson made Georgetown; Georgetown made the Big East; the Big East made college basketball = making college basketball 3rd among American sports league - whom then sent their superstars to the NBA and as I said before the rest is history

:hubie:

but I see where you’re trying to go with this debate, you want to make it a SOUTH vs EAST ~ so I’ll fall back & let u cook, because this regional shyt is played out

OP I respect and love both them brothas.

But it starts and ends with John Mclendon. Without him there would be no positionless basketball, small ball, fast breaking, motion offenses and all that shyt you see now. He was even the first to use the full court press.

Brotha was a true pioneer. Everyone should know his name.

Eh, I mean what metrics are you going by to say Georgetown/Big East made college basketball 3rd among American sports leagues? Ratings? And also lets say you are correct, how long did that last? Thompson coached until '98 so id like to hear where you think that timeline ended for Thompson making college basketball 3rd among major sports. And no its not regional, im looking at it objectively..I posted Nolan Richardsons accomplishments, its already established that hes a legend...But for me what makes him more impactful is taking lesser known talent and lesser resources in Arkansas and creating the 40 minutes of hell system to consistently get in the tournament and win the chip during arguably the zenith of College Basketball in terms of talent being there year in and year out.

Niccas poppin shyt about Nolan Richardson, and don't know anything BESIDES his title win.

Nolan Richardson is as recognized as JT, if not more.

Nolan Richardson is the ONLY coach to win a TITLE at every level of the game EXCEPT the NBA. He never coached there.

The only reason he didn't win more titles at Arkansas is because of that "scandal" involving Jessie Pate and Sunday Adebayo. Made it near impossible to recruit. He started to get back in the flow with Idgoudala commitment, but he got fired by Frank Broyles and he committed to Arizona.

His style of play is still visible today.

Arkansas tapped that ass during the tournament and was FAR more successful during the 90s.

Imagine being the 1st BLACK coach at ARKANSAS. Do you niccas know what this man went through? He wasn't in D.C., he was in Arkansas and went to war with them crackers. Made them all believers when he won the TITLE

As a big-time follower of the NCAA, it's Nolan Richardson. His impact is still big in the NCAA and his coaching tree is crazy good. As far as for the culture, it's John Thompson and it's not close. He made a white Jesuit Catholic school feel like it's a Black institution. He was everything for the culture, must-see TV, you wanted to play for him. Nolan was a better coach and it wasn't close, but John is far more loved and will always be. John is Georgetown while Nolan is Nolan.
