In my opinion, great or classic mixtapes took the place of classic albums in the 2000s. I think classic albums stopped coming out after the 90's but with the 2000's came the era of great or classic mixtapes.

Some of my favorites that were great and or classic were:

50 Cent Is The Future - 50 Cent and G-Unit
No Mercy, No Fear - 50 Cent and G-Unit
Gangsta Grillz The Legends Series 1 - Bun B
Public Enemy Number Number 1 - Beanie Sigel
Million Dollar Baby Radio - Max B
Million Dollar Baby - Max B
Million Dollar Baby 2 - Max B
Public Domain 3 - Max B
The Trauma Mixtape - Dj Quik

The most recent mixtape that I felt like was classic or great was Asap Rocky's first one. I know there's a lot of other great mixtapes I'm forgetting but the ones I listed were the ones that stayed in heavy rotation.

What's been some of ya'll favorites that you consider classic or great?

because it's changed from being a tape that is mixed by a DJ to a marketing scheme from the rapper themselves or the label to promote upcoming albums. they are now made on cd's or completely digital but they still call them mixTAPES but that doesn't mean anything, it's just a name.

A Cold Day in Hell by Freddie Gibbs and The Great Debater by Skyzoo are classic mixtapes as well, IMO. I could play either one right through and not skip a track.

you know it's just a name right? "mixtapes" have rarely been mixed ever since Clue killed the game with the exclusive. since the 50 Cent/Dip Set/Sqad Up era it has been about releasing your own versions of someone elses song or at least freestyling over a popular beat. you could say since then it has been a MIX of original songs & freestyles over pther people's beats.

the fact that terms such as "street album" or "FreEP" haven't really taken off helps the name "mixtape" stick.
