Can your phone’s GPS still be used without data/cell service?

My understanding is that you can downloand an offline version of your desired area map…then use that to drive and get around the city that you’re staying in…without using any local cell/data service.

Has this worked for y’all?

Yes. You are correct. Both Google and Apple Maps have the option to download offline maps, and since GPS relies on satellite and not data you will still be able to navigate the map without a data connection.

Also, what country/continent? Who’s your current phone provider?

last time i tried it with google maps it only let me download tiny areas and i'd have to refresh the offline cache once a month or so

i like this one way better, you download whole states/countries at a time and it's set it and forget it

Just up to Montreal.

Been using Straight Talk for about 10 years now.

iPhone 14 Pro which is E-Sim only so I can’t pop in a local SIM card and go.

iPhone 14 supports multiple e-sims, even multiple active e-sim. You probably try finding a provider that has coverage in the area and supports e-sim and get a cheap pre-paid data plan that you can use while traveling.
