Yeah, that's actually pretty damn common for gospel musicians to do that. I remember I took the chords from Jamie Foxx's "Light a Candle" and work them into a song of my own. Also had the main piano player at my methodist church back in the day take the melody for Young Dro's Shoulder Lean and throw that into a shout music /praise break, all the old heads in church running around and dancing not knowing they doing that to "worldly music".

Sometimes it happens in reverse too the R&B singer/producer takes from gospel. Queen Naija used the chord progression and vocal melody and runs from John P Kee's "you don't know my story" for her song Karma.
