What is the better combo?

The one that produced Drive and Only God Forgives.

Or the one that produced Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines.

I enjoy the Refn/Gosling movies more. But I think he gives better performances in Cianfrance's movies.

Difficult comparison since the two directors use vastly different styles. Refn is very atmospheric using a dreamy/nightmarish style. Cianfrance on the other hand focuses on down-to-earth realism. I wouldn't say Gosling is better in Cianfrance's movies, his performance in Drive is so incredibly intense yet played with such subtlety, there really aren't many actors I could see pulling off what he did there. In Cianfrance's movies he has more emotions to work with (in Refn's movies he plays archetypal characters not rooted in realism) so his roles appear more diverse.

Blue Valentine is amazing and The Place Beyond The Pines is good, but neither one touches the highs of Drive and Only God Forgives. Those are two of my favorite movies of the past few years so Refn/Gosling easily takes this for me.

Another Gold Medal
I liked OGF more than the other 3 movies mentioned but damn near everyone who I've told to watch it has hit me with a :pacspit: afterward though :heh:

OGF was nicely shot but was trash so I go with the beyond the pines guy by default.
Yep both OGF and Drive were wack

Gosling tries too hard to be that silent Brad Pitt Moneyball type actor imo

i think u got that backwards IMO pitt acts too hard trying to pull that stunt off, gosling does it effortlessly.

and to answer the question its even split for me bc i think Drive and Pines are his two best works. OGF is such a thing of beauty but you have to appreciate it in the sense of appreciating art and visual poetry more than your typical ABC straight forward movie telling. and Blue Valentine is good too, but it be my fourth favorite if were discussing these flicks. thats my opinion of course

:ld: we'll agree to disagree cuz i dont think there is anything effortless about gosling's performance in both films especially drive
