Google Maps will rename Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America in US

Google has confirmed it will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps in the US, after an executive order from Donald Trump.

It will remain the Gulf of Mexico in Mexico, while users outside of the US and Mexico will see both names on Google Maps. The Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, will also be changed to Mount McKinley in the US in line with Trump’s executive order on 20 January.

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government,” said Google in a post on X.
Explaining the different labels for the gulf in the US, Mexico and the rest of the word, Google added: “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too.”
The US president ordered the name changes as part of a flurry of executive actions hours after taking office, making good on a campaign promise.
“As directed by the president, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley,” the interior department said in a statement last week.
Google said it would update its Maps service once the names were updated in the US government’s geographic names information system.
Reacting to Trump’s pledge shortly before his inauguration to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, jokingly suggested this month that North America, including the US, should be renamed as well. She suggested “América Mexicana”, or “Mexican America”, because an 1814 founding document that preceded Mexico’s constitution used that name.

Trump said this month that the name Gulf of America had a “beautiful ring”.

“It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” he said.

Google has applied the same locale-based labelling conventions to other locations subject to naming disputes. Outside of Japan and South Korea, the body of water bordering both nations is listed as the “Sea of Japan (East Sea)”.

In 2012, Iran threatened to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the name Persian Gulf from Google Maps and leave the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless. The body of water is now labelled “Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf)” in other countries

Google is now officially a fascist tool, as its contemptible "Gulf of America" change shows -- and as removing progressive events from the calendar shows.You MUST expect now that Google will gladly hand over your most personal information to the Trump regime or anyone the regime likes. You never could trust Google, once it became an advertising company. You must now assume it is your likely enemy.

2/42
@primalmotion@antisocial.ly
@dangillmor it has been an enemy for decades

@kn_fk
@primalmotion @dangillmor The gift of trump is making people realize terrible things that have always existed, that people pretend are new.

@TotalSonic
@dangillmor - here's some possible ways on how to avoid using their services:Chrome - Firefox / LibreWolf / FloorpGoogle Drive - NextCloudGoogle search - DuckDuckGo / MojeekGmail - TutanotaGoogle Maps - Open Street Map / Magic Earth / OSMand+ / OrganicMapsGoogle Docs - LibreOffice / OnlyOfficeGoogle Calendar - Etar / Thunderbird / Gnome CalendarYouTube - PeerTube, Nebula, Vimeo

@TotalSonic @dangillmor Android? Is there a *viable* and *usable by humans* non-corporate phone option?

6/42
@TotalSonic
@davidr @dangillmor - for Android alternatives other than iPhone look at:Furilabs - https://furilabs.com/Sailfish / Jolla - 404 page - Sailfish OS your current best bets (especially if you are in USA and need VoLTE to make calls).

7/42
@TotalSonic
@davidr @dangillmor - but if you just want to "de-google" your existing Android phone so it is free of Google Play Services that send your data to them - try out:Calyx - https://calyxos.org/Graphene - https://grapheneos.org//e/ - https://e.foundation/e-os/iode - https://iode.tech/iodeos/crDroid - https://crdroid.netLineage - https://lineageos.org/

@alloalli@mastodon.nl
@TotalSonic @davidr @dangillmor A quick solution is installing DuckDuckGo browser with app tracking protection turned on. It blocks the trackers in the apps on your phone, maybe still no 100% solution but easy to do and lots of trackers are blocked.

9/42
@davidr@hachyderm.io
@alloalli @TotalSonic @dangillmor I am using both DDG and Firefox + uBlockOrigin on my phone. Also, my phone account doesn't use my name (although I'm sure Big G has figured it out already)

10/42
@Haikyoneko@famichiki.jp
@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor graphene. But you'll need a pixel phone to run it.

11/42
@TotalSonic
@Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - which goes completely counter to the goal of not giving any money to Google, and why I get annoyed at the Graphene-evangelists, who don't understand that some people might have other priorities than just privacy & security hardening to a paranoid level (which Graphene does very well) Fwiw, I use crDroid flashed to my phone, & with the TrackerControl app & a curated list of foss apps, gives me a great ad-free and smooth experience that has minimal tracking done.

12/42
@TheGreatLlama@kolektiva.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor For what it's worth, I bought an excellent condition pixel on Swappa and while helping the resale value of their phones isn't exactly ideal, I'm running Graphene without personally handing Google a dime.

13/42
@TotalSonic
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - that is all great by me - to be clear if best possible hardened security & privacy are your biggest priorities then I agree that a recent Pixel plus Graphene OS is the best choice. But if someone has other priorities, such as *using the device they already own*, or having a device with better battery life, microSD expansion, headphone jack, then there are other options that can provide this too, while still giving them more control over their data

14/42
@TheGreatLlama@kolektiva.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor Fair, though for my part, I have come up with answers for most of those.Battery life goes way up once one has dispensed with all the spyware. I have occasionally forgotten to charge my pixel and managed a whole second day on a charge. My old OnePlus running Lineage was similar.There really aren't many manufacturers still supporting microSD, and I resigned myself to just buying the version with extra storage for my huge music library.The headphone jack only hurts until you buy a set of bluetooth earbuds and wonder how you tolerated cords for so long.I've run other things on other phones and honestly, once you learn the ins and outs, Graphene is a better experience. It's not *just* about the hyper-security. Just my honest review.

15/42
@TotalSonic
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - regarding headphones: I'm an audio engineer with a severe level of snobbery as that stuff goes - blue tooth degrades audio quality immediately relative to what you get from a wired connection - although once again, that is not most other people's priorities.

16/42
@TotalSonic
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - then of course folks can just use dongles too - but I tend to lose or forget small extra bits like that, and not end up having them when I need them

17/42
@TheGreatLlama@kolektiva.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor Yeah... Hard pass on packing around extra stuff. I manage to consistently hold onto my keys, my wallet and my phone. Beyond that, we're hitting risky territory!

18/42
@TheGreatLlama@kolektiva.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor I **was** an audio snob, so I respect that. An accident with an eardrum sort of lowered my standards a bit and it seems my good ear has chosen to degrade itself somewhat to match over the years. Life I still demand better from my home equipment, but where my phone would be the source (car, out walking, etc), I'm more flexible these days.

19/42
@TotalSonic
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - as far as battery life, other devices have bigger batteries than Pixels, and again, can have the spyware stripped out - so end up with even longer life than them. Point once again being: Graphene is great, but it is NOT the only way, and some folks have different priorities than the Graphene evangelists do, for which some of the other options might work better for them. Each to their own, and whatever works is all good by me.

20/42
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social
@Haikyoneko @davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor well that's a bummer! I've been wanting to de-Google my phone for a while now but I'm sure as hell not gonna pay Google a thousand dollars for the privilege

21/42
@TotalSonic
@raphaelmorgan @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - what phone do you have? You might be able to flash Lineage or crDroid to it (as well as some other options)

22/42
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor OnePlus Nord N20It's been a while since I looked, but I remember last time I looked at all the options I could find and none of them supported my phone I think this whole pursuit is kind of aimed at middle class individuals, so there are a lot of Big Brand Name Expensive phones on there that I would never buy even if I couldBut when this one breaks I'm thinking of trying to get a phone that ships with non-Google Android

23/42
@TotalSonic
@raphaelmorgan @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - this might work for you - https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-unofficial-gunnar-15-crdroid-v11-x-for-oneplus-nord-n20-5g.4705360/

24/42
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor thanks, I'll check it out!

25/42
@TotalSonic
@raphaelmorgan @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - just be careful doing this, as one can potentially brick your phone if you make a mistake while flashing the rom (and doing so usually ends your warranty too, if you have one).

26/42
@Haikyoneko@famichiki.jp
@raphaelmorgan @TotalSonic @davidr @dangillmor the 2nd hand market is an option for cheaper pixel without giving Google money. I think the pixel 8 has 7 years of software support too.

27/42
@TotalSonic
@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - yes, but then you are helping to prop up the second hand value of Pixels, which motivates others to purchase more new Pixels, undermining the goal of boycott of Google. But yes, if the best possible security hardening is what you want then Graphene + recent Pixel is the best choice

28/42
@Haikyoneko@famichiki.jp
@TotalSonic @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor I mean, if you buy any android phone, new or second hand, that runs stock Google android you're helping prop up Google's main business which is search/advertising. They hardly make any (or maybe no) profit on hardware. It's not their core business, but more of a loss leader. In a perfect world there'd be a framework phone that runs de-googled android out of the box, but that doesn't exist. So you have to compromise somewhere.

29/42
@TotalSonic
@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - true that. Which is why endeavors like Ubuntu Touch, Droidian, Mobian, Postmarket OS, on the software side, and Volla, Shift, Pine64, Fairphone, and Furilabs on the hardware side are so important to foster as well.

30/42
@TotalSonic
@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - actually what you describes kind of exists - Volla sells rebranded Gigaset (German assembled) phones that are AOSP (or Ubuntu Touch) straight out of the box. https://volla.online/en/index.html

31/42
@Haikyoneko@famichiki.jp
@TotalSonic @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor the fact that the website doesn't really work hardly inspires confidence tbh.

32/42
@sparklepanic@infosec.exchange
@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor GrapheneOS is what you want. They are here in Fedi too!

33/42
@ruedi@social.cologne
@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor I own a Fairphone 4 and that's available as a non-google version.Unfortunately mine isn't google-free but most apps can be replaced.

34/42
@JD@wetdry.world
@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor Android is inherently open-source. See the Android Open Source Project. However, it is my understanding that all consumer Android phones will ship with proprietary apps installed, including Google apps and telemetry. It is simple for the end-user to get around this by installing an alternative Android-based operating system without any proprietary apps. For example, LineageOS, or GrapheneOS.

35/42
@punissuer@universeodon.com
@TotalSonic but be aware that even if you don't use Google for your mails, there's a good chance they'll get them anyway, as they might as well handle the mails of your contacts@dangillmor

36/42
@TotalSonic
@punissuer @dangillmor - it is likely lots of our internet traffic will get routinely routed through their servers as well. They are majorly hard to avoid unless you are totally off grid. Still - it IS possible to avoid using them for things they monetize if one is mindful of this stuff

37/42
@mmmelton
@TotalSonic @dangillmor what's wrong with rumble?

38/42
@TotalSonic
@mmmelton @dangillmor - lol, Rumble helps platform fascists, so was not on my short list at all.

39/42
@mmmelton
@TotalSonic @dangillmor did you know Firefox let's you visit Rumble?

40/42
@TotalSonic
@mmmelton @dangillmor - of course it does. And to be clear I have no problem with Rumble existing, I just would not recommend that service to others myself.

41/42
@mmmelton
@TotalSonic @dangillmor because of the fascist platforming

42/42
@tj@tech.lgbt
@TotalSonic @dangillmor to add to this: Immich is a good self-hosted Google Photos alternative

White House bars AP reporter from Oval Office because of AP style policy on ‘Gulf of America’

02/12/25

NEW YORK (AP) — The White House blocked an Associated Press reporter from an event in the Oval Office on Tuesday after demanding the news agency alter its style on the Gulf of Mexico, which President Donald Trump has ordered renamed the Gulf of America.

The reporter, whom the AP would not identify, tried to enter the White House event as usual Tuesday afternoon and was turned away. Later, a second AP reporter was barred from a late-evening event in the White House’s Diplomatic Reception Room.
The highly unusual ban, which Trump administration officials had threatened earlier Tuesday unless the AP changed the style on the Gulf, could have constitutional free-speech implications.
Julie Pace, AP’s senior vice president and executive editor, called the administration’s move unacceptable.
“It is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism,” Pace said in a statement. “Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP’s speech not only severely impedes the public’s access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment.”

The Trump administration made no immediate announcements about the moves, and there was no indication any other journalists were affected. Trump has long had an adversarial relationship with the media. On Friday, the administration ejected a second group of news organizations from Pentagon office space.

Before his Jan. 20 inauguration, Trump announced plans to change the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the “Gulf of America” — and signed an executive order to do so as soon as he was in office. Mexico’s president responded sarcastically and others noted that the name change would probably not affect global usage.

Besides the United States, the body of water — named the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years — also borders Mexico.

The AP said last month, three days after Trump’s inauguration, that it would continue to refer to the Gulf of Mexico while noting Trump’s decision to rename it as well. As a global news agency that disseminates news around the world, the AP says it must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable to all audiences.

AP style is not only used by the agency. The AP Stylebook is relied on by thousands of journalists and other writers globally.

Barring the AP reporter was an affront to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which bars the government from impeding the freedom of the press, said Tim Richardson, program director of journalism and misinformation for PEN America.

The White House Correspondents Association called the White House move unacceptable and called on the administration to change course.

“The White House cannot dictate how news organizations report the news, nor should it penalize working journalists because it is unhappy with their editors’ decision,” said Eugene Daniels, WHCA’s president.

This week, Google Maps began using “Gulf of America,” saying it had a “longstanding practice” of following the U.S. government’s lead on such matters. The other leading online map provider, Apple Maps, was still using “Gulf of Mexico” earlier Tuesday but by early evening had changed to “Gulf of America” on some browsers, though at least one search produced results for both.

Trump also decreed that the mountain in Alaska known as Mount McKinley and then by its Indigenous name, Denali, be shifted back to commemorating the 25th president. President Barack Obama had ordered it renamed Denali in 2015. AP said last month it will use the official name change to Mount McKinley because the area lies solely in the United States and Trump has the authority to change federal geographical names within the country
