But yet...we for the most part remain powerless to counter anything to do with this. Why?

The Revenue Act of 1935, 49 Stat. 1014 (Aug. 30, 1935), raised United States federal income tax on higher income levels, by introducing the "Wealth Tax". It was a progressive tax that took up to 75 percent on incomes over 5 million.[1]

It was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The 1935 Act also was popularly known at the time as the "Soak the Rich" tax.[2] To solve the problem of tax evasion through loopholes, the Revenue Act of 1937 revised tax laws and regulations to increase the efficacy of the tax.

Remember when the government had some sway economically? It only lasted a decade or two.

Let's see what the opposition to this act said:
Because of the disproportionate effect the Act had on the rich, the law became labeled by critics as the “Soak the Rich” tax.

Critics further charged that the rich simply didn’t have enough money to pay for the government’s programs, and that “soaking the rich” would ultimately lead to severe harm to the economy and the middle and lower classes.

They donate heavily to both the democrat and republican party nowadays.

All corporations, businesses and wealthy people (though this group is more likely to be partisan) do. It's smart business practice. Though certain industries obviously have their sides. If we take a look at just the Presidential election 2 years back:

According to the CRP, celebrities have shelled out $684,006 to the Obama campaign and $43,250 to the Romney campaign through October, a 16-to-1 advantage for the president over the challenger.

The CRP also tracks money from the entertainment industry as a whole, where Obama brought in $4,518,742 compared with Romney’s $836,038, a 5-to-1 ratio.

But this isn't some ground breaking news here. That by the way is money donated legally through political contributions. Who knows what the real money is when you start taking into account loopholes, PACs and other shyt.
