Gennady Golovkin, a career middleweight, is reported to have already begun training to cut down to 154lbs just in case Floyd Mayweather decides to call his name for his September bout. His trainer, Abel Sanchez, has reportedly told WBN that Golovkin can safely make the weight if he's given enough time to prepare. So looking towards the fight he's been craving, Gennady appears to be preparing for the "just in case" scenario of a Mayweather fight. He might just be spinning his wheels here, but you can't fault the guy for trying.
It's probably a long shot for Gennady to land this fight (and the proposed Froch fight fizzled after Carl went silent on negotiations) but Gennady is said to have even accepted a proposed rehydration clause mentioned by

Mayweather Sr. just to make the Mayweather fight happen. Now it'll be up to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to determine if he's going to go out with a bang, taking a big risk against a fearsome puncher, or ride cruise control with Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto - two opponents Mayweather says he's 100% serious about. If

Gennady can make the weight and Mayweather is to live up to his word of leaving the sport by fighting the best, this should be a pretty easy decision to make.

So let's play a game of "what if" for a moment. If Mayweather were to fight Golovkin at 154 and win a decision, how would that alter his legacy in your eyes, if at all?

I love the what if game, I'll indulge. :salute:

Mayweather beat Oscar clean and clear.......... people said it was too close, boring, and that Oscar was old
Mayweather KO'd Hatton............. he was too small
Mayweather dominates Marquez............ he was too small, May too big
Mayweather damn near sweeps Mosley........... he's too old, past his prime, plus Mayweather was hurt early
Mayweather KO's Ortiz........... nooooo, he wasn't ready
Mayweather outfought Cotto........ his nose was bloodied, Cotto not a real 154 fighter
Mayweather outpoints Guerrero........ Ghost not on his level, should've KO'd him
Mayweather schools Canelo......... he's too young and weight drained
Mayweather battles Maidana........ his legs are gone, he got a gift, he didn't let him use his special gloves
Mayweather boxes Maidana......... he runs too much, he's boring
Mayweather stuns Pacquiao........ he's boring, he runs too much and Pacquiao was hurt
Mayweather defeats Golovkin at 154...........

Now ask yourself, what do you think will be stated here my friend?

I'll tell you right now.
"Floyd is boring, he runs too much"
"GGG is a middleweight, he drained him"
"He didn't let GGG use his special gloves"

K2, GGG, HBO and the rest of the boxing media deep down could care less if he beats GGG because they KNOW the truth. They KNOW that they're gonna continue to push and support Golovkin while shunning Mayweather. They KNOW it would be via decision so they can spin it however they feel. That's why they really don't want him at 168, the overall strength and punching power is different up there with guys like Ward and Froch.

My point is this, Mayweather's legacy is engraved in stone to people who follow the sport righteously. For everyone else, there's nothing he can do to prove them wrong that he's just a braggadocios, women beating, boring style fighter that only fights safe fights. It will take 10-20 years before he is actually appreciated for what he's doing and done in the ring. He's not the first athlete nor boxer to go through this, as "fans" , especially towards the Black athlete, are fickle and insatiable. To say he has to take another "legacy" fight, or beat this or that fighter to preserve his "legacy", especially at this very moment, is asinine.

So what if he beats GGG, the narrative will not be in Floyd's favor either way.
Personally, I think it would be a tremendous win that ranks among his best, but he wouldn't get the credit for it.

Even if floyd fights ggg at 160, the critics will still say

"floyd is boring, he runs too much":francis:
