The best way for them to separate itself from last of us imo is just to go ultra violent like the boys
God of war and The Last of Us stand apart in big ways when it comes to their original mediums (neither hindered the others success). I believe it can be the same with the television shows. Although I really don't see God of war working in live action. I just can't see it.

You can easily flesh out his love for his wife & specifically his daughter, his rise through the ranks as a Spartan, his powers given to him by Ares which causes more bloodlust, learning he's a demigod, etc..
