NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The hunt was on Sunday morning for a gunman who shot and killed a 14-year-old girl on a city bus in Queens.

As 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported, a group of young people had just boarded the Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus at 150th Street and Rockaway Boulevard in South Jamaica around 9 p.m. Saturday, including Daja Robinson, 14.

The group apparently had just left a sweet 16 party when they got on the bus, and the man on the street fired repeatedly into the Q6 bus – hitting Daja and killing her.

“Terrible – this is, as I say, another senseless shooting,” said police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

As WCBS 880′s Jim Smith reported, Kelly said the suspect fired at least nine shots with 40-caliber bullets, whipping 11 holes into the bus.

“Nobody else was hurt. Nobody else was injured,” Kelly said. “She was struck in the right temple.”

Community leaders and local residents were gathering for a rally Sunday, to ask that anyone who may have seen anything please to come forward and give the information to police so they can track down the killer.

Kelly described the gunman as a man between the ages of 18 and 25, wearing a black sweater. He said the party was peaceful and the motive remains unclear, but Robinson remains an innocent victim.

“One thing is clear – she was not, in our judgment, the target of the shooting,” Kelly said.

Neighbors called the shooting senseless.

“She was a good kid, she ain’t deserve this,” Kenny Brown told CBS 2′s Steve Langford.

Matthew Carter told CBS 2 that a friend of his on the bus, barely escaped the barrage of bullets.

“She says as soon as she heard she started ducking and she seen a bullet pass her head,” he explained.

Family members asked to be left alone as they grieve over the loss of their child, but community advocates expressed outrage over the girl’s death.

“Imagine how the mother felt last night when she got word her daughter ain’t come home no more, imagine how the father felt,” said Jamaica NAACP spokesperson Leroy Gadsden.

The investigation in the area of Baisley Pond Park continued Sunday.

This story is a little too close to home. I have a relative who works for the MTA so this could have happened to him.
