Girl, 14, charged in shooting death of Endia Martin, 14, in Back of the Yards

A 14-year-old girl was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Endia Martin, 14. Two others may also be charged, according to Chicago police.
The 14-year-old girl was charged as a juvenile on Tuesday after police said they questioned a person of interest overnight.

Chicago police said two men, ages 17 and 24, are also in custody. Police said the young men may have brought a gun to a fight between the girls, and the 24-year-old is believed to be the uncle of the suspect.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the weapon was recovered at the scene and police are investigating how it got into the hands of the suspect.

"What would have been, under any other circumstances, a fist fight between girls arguing over a boy, turned into a murder," McCarthy said.

The weapon involved in the shooting was reported missing by a legal gun owner in the 4th District on April 13, McCarthy said, after it was stolen out of a vehicle.

"This is madness. There are too many guns coming in . . . and no one is going to jail for guns," McCarthy said. "Something has got to change."

On Monday, Martin was walking home from Tilden Career Academy in the 900-block of West Garfield when she was shot in the back around 4:30 p.m. Another girl, 16, was shot in the arm. Police said the offender ran away but was taken into custody 20 minutes later.

Martin was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she later died. The 16-year-old was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and is expected to recover.

Martin's parents said she recently transferred to Tilden in order to have a shorter, safer commute to and from school.

Grief counselors were on-hand at Tilden on Tuesday. Several students said they found out about Martin's death on Facebook. They said she hoped to join the Navy.

"She was a friend of us. She never had problems with anyone," Martin's classmate Maria Gonzales said. "She always used to smile. In JROTC she would always help anyone."

Chicago girl, 14, guns down rival in Facebook dispute over boy: police
Endia Martin, also 14, was fatally struck in the back Monday in broad daylight after her social media dispute with a former friend spilled out into the street. The gun had been stolen from a car earlier this month and reportedly jammed as the alleged murderer tried to open fire on her rival.

Facebook Endia Martin, 14, had lately been feuding with her rival and close friend, who is now accused of killing the Chicago teen Monday in broad daylight.
Another virtual diss has turned into a real-life tragedy.

A Facebook feud between two 14-year-old girls over a boy ended when one gunned down the other on a Southside Chicago porch in broad daylight Monday afternoon, police said.

The unnamed teen perp, who has been charged with murder as a juvenile, whipped out a stolen .38-caliber handgun about 4:50 p.m. and tried to shoot into a crowd of people. The gun jammed and the girl handed it to someone else, who cleared the piece and gave it back.

As she sprayed the porch with gunfire, she struck Endia Martin in the back, killing her and grazing a 16-year-old girl in the arm.

"What would have been, under any other circumstance, probably a fistfight between 14-year-old girls, because they were fighting over a boy, turned into a murder," Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune. "You introduce a firearm and you have a murder."

The gun used in the tragic crime was stolen from a car April 13, and the girl’s 24-year-old uncle and a 17-year-old boy also face charges related to the incident, according to the Tribune.

"It appears that the two individuals we have in custody brought the gun to the scene — may have brought the gun to the scene — and were trying to discard the gun afterwards," McCarthy said at a press conference announcing the murder charges.

The alleged shooter, who showed little emotion during her court appearance, was a high school freshman on the basketball team.

No family was in the courtroom on her behalf, the newspaper reported.

Endia and her alleged murderer were longtime friends who’d recently had a spat over a boy, family members said. Endia was a honor roll student, family told the Tribune.

nbcchicago.com Kent Kennedy was distraught after his stepdaughter, Endia Martin, 14, was gunned down Monday.
"Endia was smart, intelligent. She liked to dance and to sing. She didn't deserve this," Lauren Joseph, the girl’s 29-year-old cousin, told the newspaper as she stood outside her home where the shooting occurred. "I can't stay here no more. I'm scared for my life here and I don't want to be here."

The entire city of Chicago has been seemingly under siege during a weekslong rash of shootings and murders.

Endia and the 16-year-old girl, both shot on the porch in the Back of The Yards section of the city, were among seven shot Monday afternoon into early Tuesday, according to the Tribune.

Just a week prior, five kids between the ages of 11 and 16 were shot at a park in the city’s Park Manor neighborhood. More than 50 children ages 16 and younger have been shot so far in 2014, and nearly 100 people have been murdered in the city.

The girl’s stepfather, Kent Kennedy, was distraught over the city’s violent epidemic that claimed his stepdaughter.

“They had words and she gunned our daughter down. For what? What reason would another girl gun down another child?” he told the Tribune. "It's senseless. Kids are dying so young nowadays. It's senseless. Parents shouldn't have to bury no child."

Facebook, the social media giant, has been the source of several feuds, crimes and even murders internationally.

Last month, a Mexican 16-year-old girl knifed to death her teen friend after the victim posted naked selfies of them together on the online site.

Facebook Katrice Wyche, pictured, says her sister Virginia was forced to shoot pregnant Markeisha Brooks in self-defense.
A Florida woman is in jail after allegedly shooting her pregnant friend in the stomach and killing the unborn baby – but the suspect's eldest sister says it's far more complicated than it appears.

Katrice Wyche, 42, claims her sister Virginia, 35, acted in self-defense April 23 when she pulled the trigger.

Wyche alleges the pregnant woman, Markeisha Brooks, 23, showed up at her Jacksonville home with a group of people to jump her.

"She had three other people with her to guarantee that my sister got beat up, but it did not work out like that," Katrice Wyche told the Daily News on Tuesday. "The girl slapped my sister! When she went to hit her again, that's when my sister shot her."

Wyche, a former police officer, was raised in Jacksonville but lives in Pasadena, Texas. She reached out to her sister after learning about the arrest for attempted murder from reading The News last week.

"She said, 'Katrice, I don't understand why I'm in here.' My sister's bond should not be $1 million. It was clearly self-defense," she said. "I want my sister out of jail."

Wyche is on her way to Florida to file a complaint with the state attorney’s office demanding that warrants be issued for the people she says went to her sister's house.

"My sister was like, 'I'm in my house, get off my property,'" Wyche said.

She also wants Brooks to be held accountable for knowingly putting her unborn child into jeopardy by allegedly instigating the fight.

WTEV Markeisha Brooks is seen moments after she was shot in the stomach. The alleged attack by Virginia Wyche killed Brooks’ unborn child.
The incident stemmed from an argument over the Facebook the previous evening. Neighbors were reportedly shocked to discover that Virginia Wyche – an otherwise peaceful woman – was charged with such a gruesome crime.

Brooks was taken to a hospital following the incident and her condition is unknown. Her family could not be reached to respond to the sister's allegations.

The Office of the State Attorney confirmed the attempted murder charge but could not comment further because of the active investigation. The Jacksonville County Sheriff's Office also declined to speak when contacted by the Daily News for the same reason.
