UPS is the textbook definition of a union based company. That’s the only reason UPS drivers get paid a livable wage compared to most delivery driver jobs. But the Union mostly exists at UPS to encourage safe driving... not fight for employee rights. They mandated 70 hour weeks for UPS drivers a few years ago. Mandatory overtime. And it’s worse since covid because the entire mailing industry is overwhelmed because everybody order online now. UPS drivers used to only pull the crazy hours mostly during peak, now it’s year round. UPS and the post office have been smacked the worst because they still run things like how they did in 1985.
At least with Amazon and FedEx Ground, there are a hundred million companies subcontracting out the delivery drivers. Anyone with 10 racks can start their own Amazon DSP company dispatching out delivery vans. And every DSP is run different. Some DSPs are laid back and don’t overwork their drivers. But Amazon is like roaches. Popping up everywhere that is neglected. Taking over any empty parking lot to become full of those poorly maintained dirty Georgetown Hoyas colored vans. UPS has like one or two hubs handling all the packages per major metro area. If you are working at UPS in 2021, you will be working year round like it’s peak season.
