The Wrong Side of the Tracks
Hold up. I thought the Goths sacked and defeated Rome after a 10-year siege where the Romans resorted to cannibalism to survive. The losses in Germania were just symptomatic of the erosion of Roman imperial strength due to corruption and incompetent resource management.

Gonna have to peep this doc.

It's crazy how little is taught about northern Europeans pre Roman era. It's like somehow the "uncivilized" histories of the western world are glossed over, while the "uncivilized" histories of other peoples are highlighted.

:mjpls:

I understand there was no written language to record a lot of that history, but It's like the history of northern Europeans started with their contact Romans.

One battle....meanwhile Rome dominated Europe for nearly 2,000 years.

Also, calling the many Germanic chiefdoms a nation is inaccurate.

hmm it happened during the time of augustus right after ceaser, rome was at its peak

and yeah rome dominated for 1000 years but they never went past the river elbe, it was basically Rome's Vietnam

The battle in the Teutoburg Forest
The name of the Teutoburg Forest in Germany will forever be connected to one of the most famous battles from ancient history, the clades Variana, the defeat of the Roman general Varus. In September 9 CE, a coalition of Germanic tribes, led by a nobleman named Arminius, defeated the Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth legions and forced their commander Publius Quintilius Varus to commit suicide. The result of the battle was that Germania remained independent and was never included in the Roman empire.
