I don’t know much about the tv industry and saw this tweet.

Her family isn’t getting a dime but, I know that advert money is going somewhere.

Before I sign the petition.
I wanted to know what’s up.

The network sales the ad space to the advertisers, the advertisers pay the network, the networks pays the producers for the rights, the producers pay the crews.

That's basically how all TV works.

So it’s up to the network to give the family money

No.
If it's a pay to play situation that money should come from the producers.Either an amount upfront or on the backend depending on what they can sell it for. And what the family agrees to.

Now with this one and where it gets tricky is since NYT is a journalism outlet more than a production company, I dont know their leanings when it comes to paying people for interviews, stories, etc when it comes to documentaries.
Regular stories you dont pay for that type of stuff due to journalistic integrity but depending on how they're looking at it they might cough up some back end money after its sold.
