Am I confused or is everyone on Twitter just talking out of their ass for engagement?
People need to look at the timelines and procedures more carefully. Before Santos was expelled, Repbulicans held a 222-213 majority. Even with Santos and McCarthy both gone, that only gets the Republican majority down to 220-213.
If Santos is replaced by a Democrat, and Johnson resigns too, that gets things to 219-214. That means even if two Republicans FLIP, it still isn't a Democratic majority. And if we're just talking about Republicans disappearing, they would need up to 5 to disappear just to get a tie. There's no Democratic majority unless 6 Republicans disappear for a day, or 3 Republicans flip.
It seems like people are confusing "flipping" seats with "losing" seats. Republicans only had 4 seats to spare if people FLIPPED. But if people merely leave, it's 8 seats to spare, not 4. Santos getting flipped gets that down to 6, but McCarthy and Johnson ain't gonna be replaced with Democrats that I see, so they would only get it down to 4.
