This sanctuary city argument has been stupid since inception. I get to see a lot of idiots. Talk about it in the Chicago, migrant thread, and none of them know what it is. Simply put, our city sanctuary status means the officers when conducting business do not fish for the status of people during routine traffic stops or citations, or anything of the sort. In case people don’t know, immigration is a federal issue to enforce, not a local or state one. If there is a crime in say, a Haitian or Ukrainian, or Hispanic neighborhood, interviewing people for information does not come with them also questioning immigration status. When people feel they may get deported during questioning, they tend not to cooperate during investigations. in the case of violent crimes, they will be dealt with by ice, but it is not something Chicago or any sanctuary city goals out of its way to do.
Sanctuary does not mean “come one come all with no status“ like these right wing idiots keep parroting. Long story short, the migrants that are legally in our country and are being shipped to sanctuary cities have zero to do with the sanctuary city status. Again, those migrants are being legally processed and shipped to cities. They are not hopping over borders and traveling thousands of miles. Cities dont get special funding for declaring themselves sanctuaries, hence why NUC and Chicago are buckling under LEGAL asylum seeker influxes.
