It's one of my favorite books/films but, that's one thing that irks me. This nikka met this chick when he was 20 and DIDN'T EVEN DATE HER. No relationship. No I love you and you love me or any kind of deep emotional connection. They had something real but, the relationship didn't work out. That I can understand. But homie just had a little fling with her for a summer 
He tells her flippantly not to forget him and he's going to marry her after the war. She of course marries another dude because she barely knew this muthafukka and he was poor 
He carries this with him for 7 years while he builds an illegal bootlegging empire. Now he's 32 and worth hundreds of millions of dollars.......he can have any girl in the country and he's still on some chick he barely knew 10 years ago. Cmon b. You deposit $500 million into my account tonight and I'm not sure if I'm still with my girl tomorrow. Let alone some crusty ex from college/high school. Had he simply moved on and found a new girl, he could have been Joe Kennedy status. Instead he died in a pool like a bytch reaching out for Daisy's house when she had already packed her bags and boarded a plane for France or wherever with no fukks given about him at all
