I got to watch. Appreciate the thread.
:salute:
I’m doing my family tree this month. I learned a lot about my dad’s side. Good and bad.
:to:
My great-great-great-grandfather moved to Belize from Honduras to escape the Nicaragua/Central American war. His son married a woman from Trujillo, Honduras.

My mom was born in Honduras. Both her parents were Garifuna. All my dad’s mother’s people are from Honduras. We have family members in LA that only speak Garifuna and Spanish. Their English is terrible.

All that being said, my father never spoke the language to us.
:francis:
He speaks it amongst his siblings and his parents when they were alive. My mom the same. Gen X and Gen Y Garifunas in LA didn’t get the tools needed to carry our culture to the next generation.
:why:
Them boomers were on one and chose next to pass the knowledge down.

Their mindset was so focused on assimilation that they thought the situation would remain similar to what it was then...Unfortunate.... When I was living in Honduras I was living up in the mountains, so it was only sparsely that i got to go to the coast. Especially La Ceiba and even less Trujillo cause they were so far away. It's surprising to me that Garifuna culture and community is what has stayed with me the most in terms of memories from back then.

Pops is still down there and my next trip down will be with the intention of doing plenty of things on the coast but now with tje difference of being a man and having Knowledge of Self.
