We have a pretty healthy digital business,” he said, “which includes downloadable content for PC and console games, full game downloads, Steam points cards and currencies, and casual games site Kongregate’s online and mobile games sales.”

To Raines, digital gaming is a profitable prospect.

“We see that as a $1 billion business this year.”

Despite his faith in the digital market, Raines doesn’t think more traditional styles of gaming will dissipate anytime soon.

“Disc based games will be around forever,” he told Fortune. “I see a complementary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will also likely follow this model.”

Disc based games will be around with the introduction of 4K consoles next generation. What are we gonna be doing, downloading 200gb games?

shyt, we're already reaching 60gb games right now. That's a fourth of some peoples' download limit. What happens when we get to the inevitable 100gb games later this generation? Disc based games will be around until internet providers raise limits and speed up downloads.

Now if google fiber, or an equivalent, was readily available to all, that would be a different subject, but these a$$hole internet providers are continuing to limit the amount you can download a month. I don't see that stopping.

Disc based games will be around until the infrastructure for 4K is built. But when will that be? 10 years? We're slow with upgrading our internet in the US. Europe is killing us with download speeds.
