They were a bunch of kids who barely knew anything about the law and were being questioned without a Lawyer or their parents present.
It's been shown time and time again that detectives and prosecutors are capable of getting confessions out of people who are innocent.

That shyt happens to people who are grown too.
They put people in stressful situations, put even more pressure on them, and take advantage of their ignorance of the law. They've done studies where they did that shyt to college students and gotten confessions out of them for crimes they didn't commit.
