An FX reboot of the successful 1980 mini-series Shōgun is arriving in 2023. Once again, the new 10-episode Shōgun, will be based on James Clavell’s best-selling novel of the same name.
Hiroyuki Sanada (Royal Warriors, Speed Racer) and Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth) play male leads, Yoshii Toranaga (originally played by Toshiro Mifune) and John Blackthorne (originally played by Richard Chamberlain), respectively. Anna Sawai (F9: The Fast Saga) takes on the role of Lady Mariko (originally portrayed by the late Yoko Shimada).
Written by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, Shōgun is set in feudal Japan. It charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne (Jarvis), a risk-taking English pilot major who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko (Sawai), a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties who must prove her value and allegiance (via Deadline).
Andrew Macdonald, Michael De Luca, and Michaela Clavell serve as executive producers alongside Tim Van Patten (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos), who also directs multiple episodes. Writers of the series include Eugene Kelly and Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies).
Look out for Shōgun in 2023.
