Our pal Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times has written an article that looks at the various challenges the NFL is facing. One of the biggest arises from persuading fans to choose to attend games over watching them at home.

Late in the item comes an intriguing prediction about the configuration of future NFL stadiums, courtesy of NFL executive V.P. of business operations Eric Grubman.

“What if a new stadium we built wasn’t 70,000, but it was 40,000 seats with 20,000 standing room?” Grubman said. “But the standing room was in a bar-type environment with three sides of screens, and one side where you see the field. Completely connected. And in those three sides of screens, you not only got every piece of NFL content, including replays, Red Zone [Channel], and analysis, but you got every other piece of news and sports content that you would like to have if you were at home.

“Now you have the game, the bar and social setting, and you have the content. What’s that ticket worth? What’s that environment feel like to a young person? Where do you want to be? Do you want to be in that seat, or do you want to be in that pavilion?”

Plenty of people would choose to be in the pavilion, if the price is right. (And if the beer isn’t priced quite so high.)

i have mixed feelings about this

while it's nice for the casual fan to have that sort of option, but it almost water downs the experience.

as a season ticket holder, there's a lot of comradery with fellow fans cuz you share the experience of watching it live whether you're on the 50 yd line or up in the bleeds.

now there's this fringe group... not sure how i feel about that lol

:dead: at dealing with parking, the hoards of people, the stadium food/beer price gouging, and having to stand on your fukking feet for 4 hours to watch the red zone channel and be far as fukk from the live game. who the fukk would actually want to buy this ticket?

People do this every single weekend to go to bars and clubs. Thats the whole idea...

But this will never happen for the same reason. I assume the "standing" seats would be much cheaper but still it changes the whole nature of sports viewing. The NFL is not trying to get into the sports night life business. You gotta cater to women, worry about security, people gotta worry about how they dress etc. And what do you do with kids. Thats a way bigger risk than people just getting too used to the TV experience...

what bar do people battle thousands of others for food/drinks/seats/parking every weekend, paying a premium in the process, to watch sports? :wtf: if i go to a buffalo wild wings, i dont have to park a mile from the bar, or pay 25 dollars to park my car in their lot, or wait in a 20 minute line to get food/drinks, they actually have specials on food/drinks where you pay like a third of what the stadium charges, etc. this idea is a complete pile of shyt

I don't know about "battle", but if you go out at night on a weekend in any major city in America parking, food, traffic and prices are an issue...Las Vegas for example...

And I assume they would lower ticket prices and increase the amount restaurants to accommodate the "pavillion" or whatever. Its not really that strange. People still go to amusement parks and malls during Christmas...its all entertainment

going to a club in vegas is not analogous to paying to watch sports at a live venue in a bar setting. the club going experience is not offered anywhere else but the club. not even in the same argument. watching live sports in a bar type setting is literally offered at hundreds of places in most cities, in FAR cheaper, safer, and more convenient environments

You don't know how safe cheap or convenient it would be becuz this is all hypothetical.

Like you said you can watch the game at your house or in 100 other places...but people still go to games anyways (and people still open new sports bars even tho thousands already exist :ohhh:). Its just another option.
