Johannesburg - Cosatu general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi is embroiled in an alleged rape and blackmail scandal in which he is accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague who then demanded R2m for the problem to go away.
City Press has obtained documents which lift the lid on the scandal, and the married Vavi on Friday confirmed the allegations against him but denied he had raped the woman.
He admitted to having sex with her in a Cosatu office in January this year.
"I have to be truthful to the public, I have had to deal with my family for not being faithful and it is a difficult matter. I apologise to everyone for having had an affair while I have a perfect marriage. I shouldn't have done that, it was a bad error on my side, I shouldn't have had a relationship at all," Vavi told City Press.
The complainant - who appears not to have laid criminal charges against Vavi - refused to speak to City Press.
"I am not going to say anything. Feel free to write whatever you want," she said.
See City Press on Sunday for details of how the alleged victim and her husband demanded R2m to keep quiet, how Vavi is defending himself and more.
