If you’ve been missing Jason Voorhees, don’t worry – it looks like you’ll be seeing plenty more of him soon, as a Friday the 13th TV show is now in development.
Deadline reported the news, revealing Sean S. Cunningham, who directed the original Friday the 13th in 1980, is one of the executive producers on the series. Yes, there was a Friday the 13th: The Series once before, produced by Paramount while they were making the films, but that show was completely unconnected to the Jason storyline. This time though, the intent is to make a show set in Crystal Lake, with Jason very much a part of it.
Jason Voorhees: Ready for prime time.
Deadline says the Friday the 13th show focuses “on the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed.” While the show is set in the present, it seems a lot of flashbacks will be involved, showing Jason “in multiple time periods.” The original film had Jason drown as a young boy in the 1950s, before returning as an increasingly undead killing machine. One film, Jason Goes to Hell, also revealed more about Jason’s family – but given the entire series was rebooted with the 2009 Friday the 13th film (and next year’s new Friday movie looks to be yet another reboot) and it’s unlikely the TV show will stick to the already-shaky continuity laid out in this earlier films.
Last year, Cunningham had revealed there was a potential Friday the 13th series in the works, but at the time, he felt it could end up as an internet project. It’s not clear where this series will end up as far as distribution, but it will be made up of one-hour episodes.
Said Cunningham, to Deadline, “Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide. Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake.”
The pilot script for the Friday the 13th movie will be written by Bill Basso and Jordu Schell, both who come from a makeup and effects background. Basso’s credits include Terminator 2 and the first two Jurassic Park movies, while Schell contributed to 300 and Avatar, among other films. It sounds like big horror FX are a priority, with the project already hiring Roy Knyrim (whose credits include Gods And Monsters and several Prophecy and Wishmaster films) of SOTA FX to coordinate the special make-up effects for the series.

I'd rather see a sequel to the remake movie that came out in 2009.
