Free .avi to dvd converter?

I have never had to convert anything in my life, I have everything on a hard drive that plays through my WD, but I have a very old Abott and Costello movie I need to burn on to DVD for my grandpa.

After looking for an hour, I finally found it, and I don't know if his DVD player plays .avi files so I need to convert it.

Does someone have a link to one or can recommend one?

You can use MP4 box or something to convert MKV to MP4 but I use Vidcoder/Handbrake.
