Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach appeared on the most recent edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk to us about his large stable of fighters' upcoming fights.
Former three-division champion Miguel Cotto is the latest edition to Roach's stable. Cotto faces Delvin Rodriguez on October 5th in an HBO televised main event that takes place in Orlando, Florida. Roach said that Rodriguez will make for a tough fight but that Cotto will be prepared and come out with the victory. "This is is first time training in LA. He rented a house here in Los Angeles. He is working his butt off. He is coming along very well. I look forward to his fight. Delvin Rodriguez is an awkward fighter but Cotto will be ready for him" Roach explained.
Roach said that Cotto has been working very hard and is in great shape for the fight. He also said that the Puerto Rican fighter has done everything that he has asked of him. "We just work our asses off. I give him 10-12 rounds on the mitts. One thing I learned about Miguel is he is a workaholic. He gets up at 5 am to do his strength and conditioning. He works from 5 am to 8 am in the morning then he goes homes and eats a little bit and sleeps then he goes back to the gym at 2 pm and we do our boxing work" Roach told us on BoxingScene Radio. The Hollywood, Calif. based trainer also revealed that Cotto is almost on weight and said that while there has been talk of Cotto moving up to 160 pounds, he could see Cotto possibly going back down to the welterweight division.
"He said this is the best training camp he has ever had. He is only two pounds over and we are still over three weeks out. I am thinking that he is better off at 47 than 60. He is only over by 2 pounds now and we aren't even trying to make weight. We will discuss it after this fight because we have to take care of Delvin Rodriguez first " Roach stated.
