I had the fortune to catch a double bill of Frankenstein and Bride of.. A few years ago, I had never seen them before this. Frankensteins Monster had devolved into something cartoonish by the time I was born, and was the big green guy with bolts in his neck, not particularly scary.

But Boris Karlov was just unbelievable in the role of The Monster..the childlike demeanour and sheer confusion and monstrosity in his actions. There are scenes that still shock now. In Frankenstein 1931, when the doctor brings the monster to life he shouts 'now I know what it feels like to be God' (paraphrasing).. I was like... no fukkin way they allowed this back then. Turns out they didn't, it was cut for a long time, but it goes to show what type of boundaries they were pushing.

Out of the first two it's highly arguable that the sequel is better... but I was surprised again when watching Son of Frankenstein in that its again, arguable, better than them both. Bela Lugosi as Ygor is astounding

Im still yet to watch Ghost of Frankenstein. Also want to see Young Frankenstein, the Gene Wilder movie, which seems a lot of people treat as an unofficial sequel

Any love for these and the other Universal classic Monster movies?

I didn’t watch the OG Universal Monster movies until a few years back. Really like them now with Frankenstein being my favorite. I just started Penny Dreadful because of my fandom. Give it a watch if you like the monsters.

Young Frank is different. Like any other company doing their own version on the lore. Don’t know where the unofficial sequel talk comes from.

Sorry breh sites playing up I had no alert you had replied

Im the same I've only watched them last 5 years, and I was surprised that Frankenstein was the best of a very strong line up... The invisible man was close though that was unreal, and I think I need to see Dracula again I was a bit distracted tbh

I think the unnoficial sequel stems from the similar vibes, and in son of Frankenstein, Baron frankensteins kid is a curly headed blonde boy so looks wise he's similar to gene wilder

I mean, very unnoficial of course.

That whole era was unreal though. Films like Kong too, legitimately scary or thought provoking, great writing and acting

I have gone to watch Penny Dreadful a few times but either couldn't get into it or got distracted, will try again
