Former WWE and WCW referee Mickie Henson has passed away.

According to a report from Pwinsider, Henson (better known as Mickie Jay) passed away on Monday evening after a battle with COVID-19. He was 59 years old.

Henson began his career in pro wrestling back in 1987. He worked under the ring name of Mickie Jay. At the time, he worked closely with Steve Keirn, Mike Graham, and Gordon Solie in Championship Wrestling from Florida. While working with WWE, Henson did an interview with WWE.com about how he got his start in the pro wrestling business. He said,

My first match was in Orlando, Fla., at the Eddie Graham Sports Complex. I think it’s been turned into apartment buildings now. The match was between Bob Cook and a young Mike Awesome. I wasn’t really all that nervous. I had watched it on television forever. I paid attention to the referees, and when I got out there I kind of just fell into it. I was lucky enough to learn from some of the best workers of the time like dikk Slater and Mike Graham so it was pretty easy to catch on.”

Henson signed with WCW in 1992 and worked for the company for nine years until WCW was sold to WWE in 2001. While he didn’t join WWE right after the sale, he was re-hired in 2005 and worked matches on RAW. He was also in charge of the Hardcore Match between Edge and Mick Foley at WrestleMania 22. In 2006, he was moved over to the ECW brand and then moved to SmackDown in 2007. Henson was later released from WWE in January of 2009.
