He was still being offered roles during that time period (mostly killer and monster roles in horror films, natch) but turned them down because he had decided to retire from acting to focus on writing. By the time the 90's rolled around there was a resurgence of horror and slasher thx in large part to Wes Craven and Hansen decided to say fukk it and start playing some homicidal freaks againI like how they play the sounds of pigs as that scene happens. It's almost like that's how Leatherface views his prey. Pigs being lead to slaughter.
Kind of weird that he did nothing in the 1970s and 1980s (only 3 films including TCM in 20 years) and then in the mid-1990s saw a resurgence in his popularity to the point he was being cast in a lot of stuff up until his death.
