I never really liked the Grateful Dead but I'm a huge Leonard Cohen and Dylan fan.

They're probably my top two Folk artists among the old guard like Guthrie and Seeger.

I also like Paul Simon and Don Mclane.

And Springsteen's folk albums like Nebraska, The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Devils & Dust are some of my all time favorite albums.

I know some folks who rave about Cohen, but I never took the time to listen. Where should I start?

I LOVE Joni Mitchell. But I think Hejira is the closest to "folk" I've heard from her.

How would you classify the genre? Dat Bohemian Hippie Music?

Simon and Garfunkel's greatest hits album, I slept to that. It was the story of my life at one point. The Boxer and all that.

It's hard to classify a genre for me but If I had too, I would probably call it the leftist, intellectual counter-part to Country.

Folk goes back so god damn far.

Anyway, Leonard Cohen's music went through a lot of different periods up to even a few years ago.

I suggest start with a more 60's oriented Folk sound like "Songs from a Room" but also a more modern album like "Im Your Man" or his most recent, "Old Ideas."

My favorite song is "The Future" which is a far departure from his early sound.

I saw him at the Garden a few years ago. I couldn't believe a man his age could still perform like that.

For the sake of the thread, I also enjoyed Johnny Cash's folk-oriented albums.

Or even the "Essential Leonard Cohen" double album is a good start if you listen from beginning to end.

Leonard Cohen meticulously picked the tracks himself and its in chronological sequence.
