In New Smyrna Beach, FL Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 33-year-old mother after they said she was breastfeeding her 2-month-old baby while driving drunk.

This incident occurred early Tuesday morning in the 1800 block of State Road 44.

Deputies said they were pulling over Cateria Thomas for having an altered temporary tag and a child unrestrained.

According to the arrest report, deputies said as they reached the driver’s side window, Thomas was sitting in the vehicle breastfeeding a small child.

Deputies said she had red bloodshot and glassy eyes, her speech was slurred, and in the back seat were three other children ages 1, 3 and 4.

In the front passenger seat, deputies noticed a full gas can.

Deputies said during a field sobriety test, she was swaying and not able to steady her balance.

“Doing that to a child is not right, that’s not a mother,” said Thomas’ neighbor, Sylvia Dabbs.

Family at Thomas’ residence would not comment and claimed it was the wrong house. One neighbor, however, said that the children’s grandmother told her what happened.

“She came over here and talked to us and said that [Thomas] had drove drunk last night with the baby and was breastfeeding and all the four kids got taken away this afternoon,” said Dabbs.

The Florida Department of Children and Families released a statement saying, “We are very concerned about this incident. This is very alarming that you would have someone trying to breastfeed their child while driving and especially while driving drunk. Seldom, do we see this type of incident taking place. The safety of our children is our top concern.”

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report said Thomas refused a breathalyzer, but did advise she had four hamburgers with whiskey in them.

DCF is doing background checks on relatives to find a place for the children, they said.

Thomas was still in the Volusia County jail Tuesday night for unlawful alteration to her tag, operating with a suspended license, a child act that could result in physical or mental injury, and DUI.

You don't think that's harsh
"
Will it harm my breastfeeding baby if I drink wine, beer, or hard alcohol?
It could if you don't take precautions. The same amount of alcohol that makes it into your bloodstream makes it into your breast milk.

While the amount that's transferred if you drink a glass of wine is relatively small, your baby is tiny and has an immature liver. That means she can't process the alcohol as well as you can. Infants younger than 3 months process alcohol at about half the rate of adults.

Studies show that alcohol can affect babies' eating and sleeping. During the four hours after a breastfeeding mother consumes an alcoholic beverage such as 4 ounces of wine, one mixed drink, or one can of beer – babies who nurse consume about 20 percent less milk.

And while breastfed babies may become drowsy and fall asleep more quickly after their mother drinks alcohol, they also sleep for a shorter amount of time.

Alcohol in breast milk may also hinder babies' development. In a landmark study of 400 breastfed babies, gross motor development at 1 year of age lagged in infants whose mothers drank at least one drink daily during the babies' first three months of life. The results of this study have not been duplicated, however.

While no one knows the true effect that alcohol has on breastfed infants, it's probably wise to abstain – at least in the very beginning. Some experts recommend breastfeeding moms avoid drinking alcohol until their baby is 3 months old.

If you're worried that you're drinking too much, talk to your doctor."

the infant is in a very crucial stage of development, you know?
if this is how she acts, maybe she needs a chance down the road, just not right now

So its okay to drink, but not too much just in moderation.

Im not too say what a woman should or shouldn't do with their breast. But had that been my child mother and child involved I would be upset. I remember my cousin was pregnant and we at this restaurant. And she ordered some wine. I couldn't believes it. She had a glass of wine and she was trying to let me know its okay.

I have no idea if it's okay or not :patrice:
idk, I just feel like a nursing mom should be really apprehensive about alcohol, certainly not getting drunk

I know a woman that recently had a baby and is breastfeeding. She says she drinks, but she gives the baby formula if she does get like drunk or whatever
