Officials said 50-year-old Ron Neilson accidentally lit himself on fire while setting up a burning cross Tuesday night at a home on Wacker Avenue in Palm Bay.
Wood, gasoline and candles were all part of the decorations, and when Neilson lit one, it exploded, lighting his clothing on fire.
According to authorities, Neilson screamed for help while rolling on the ground.
When the victim's wife heard his screams she grabbed a water hose.
"The victim's wife came outside to find him on the ground," said Palm Bay police Cpl. Yousef Hafza. "She used the water hose to put the fire out."
"They put the fire out now. But he is probably a trauma alert. His hands are second-, probably a little bit third-degree," said a 911 caller.
Neilson's injuries were so severe he had to be airlifted to an Orlando burn unit for treatment.
"He has some singeing around his mustache. I don’t know if he inhaled any of the of the flames or not," said the caller.
According to officials, Neilson has second-degree burns over 40 to 50 percent of his body.
A fire official said the burning cross was a joke that was not aimed at anyone. There was no explanation about the relationship between Halloween and a burning cross.
