OCEAN RIDGE, Fla. (WFLA) — A tree trimmer died Tuesday after he got caught in a woodchipper while performing work around the town hall and police station of a small Florida beach town.
Ocean Ridge Town Manager Lynne Ladner told
NBC affiliate WPTV a contracted vendor had been hired to trim the trees in the area. The crew reportedly went to work around 9 a.m.
Only about 30 minutes passed before tragedy struck. Officials said one of the workers went to put an object in the woodchipper but got caught in the machine and was pulled in headfirst.
“Other members of the crew saw it happening, is my understanding, and immediately began responding, as did our staff and officers,” Ladner said.
However, city officials said the person had already died from their injuries by the time police arrived. Ladner said no other individuals were injured, and the man’s family will be notified.
According to Ladner, the small town has not experienced another work site accident of this level or any level in at least the last 10 to 15 years.
“It is a horrible loss of life,” the town manager told WPTV.
OSHA was notified and responded to the scene. Boynton Beach Fire Rescue will also be providing grief counseling to town employees and vendor staff.
