Fruity slicer, slicex, or edison?

Also, what are some tips/tutorials you have on sampling?

Trying to really start making dope beats with samples. I just don't know how many chops I should have per beat and how to time them properly (time the chopping so it doesn't end abruptly).

FL Studio is my bytch :win:

grab a four bar drum loop, throw it into Fruity Slicer (Channels>Add one>FL Slicer, click and drag sample)

23w751d.jpg

  1. Top right where it says '4 Beats,' when you drag the sample into Fruity Slicer, it'll originally be like 25 beats, drag that shyt all the way down to 4.
  2. Then right click on that button with the razor, click 'Slice To Beat'
  3. Then run the '4 Beats' up to 8. (Also, barely bring up the ATT/DEC like 10ms to clean up the chop 'clicks').
Go to piano roll, you have four chops, repeat the first two drum chops, add the other two on the 4th measure for the changeup :lawd:..

Find a 4 bar sample, Slice it the same way and play it over the drums.

Q2W3E4R5T6Y is the order of fl slicer notes when you're using just keyboard/mouse

30navis.jpg

the top row of the keyboard becomes a piano for all you 'I miss my triton's 88 keys' cats, in other words, q-w-e-r-t-y are 7 white keys, and the 23 is C#/D#, then 567 is F#/G#/Bb or the black keys. The chops get slightly lagged, so you go into piano roll to realign them.

Then you can take like four 4-bar loops, Slice each one, and then play around like that. Group all the Fruity Slicers together onto one mixer, and add filters or sidechain compress it.

that's the Zen of FL brehs, go fukkin' bananas. :cape:

I've got that shyt down to a science, je suis artiste :blessed::banderas:

open the song in edison, find the loop you want, then bring the loop into fl slicer.

Blessed, Coli came through. Thanks, breh.

Also, is there a way to play around with effects so I can take out the drums in a sample? I'm trying to sample Aaliyah's "Try Again," and the drums are rather prominent in the song.

not really, just sample it and throw your own drums over it that are more knocking

eq'ing the sample to take out as much of the drums as you can, but there's no way to really get rid of anything 100%. It's usually a try and get rid of it, layer your own stuff over

I don't use Slicex cause it gives errors when you clone it like 5 times.
So i went back to Fruity Slicer.

First i chop up a sample in Edison. Than drag it over to Fruity Slicer.
Slicer makes a lot of mistakes if you let it automatically chop.

I always use downloaded sample packs for my drums.
My samples i download with Soulseek.

When i had the MV-8800 i used to sample from vinyl. I went with software and didn't sample of vinyl since.
When i get a new soundcard i will sample from vinyl again.

I just sample in edison, mark the chops i want to use in there, then throw said chops in fpc. I often make a copy of the fpc (occasionally slicer) and mess about with that at an octave/s up or down underneath the main sample with some delay, filter ect on. It adds to the texture and atmosphere if it's needed.

When you sample a melody, do you sample 4 bars or just 1 bar?

It's always different for me. Sometimes i sample a straight 8 bar loop but other times i sample only a 1 bar loop.
And sometimes i re-arrange chops to make something totally different.
It really doesn't matter as long as the result is creative.

Like this beat is just a straight 8 bar loop. But i copy the Fruity Slicer 5 times.
Than route the 5 copies through 5 different mixerchannels and put different effects on them. (Edit... i always use the same 5 different EQ's on my 5 mixertracks which are in my Template)

I use these build in filters in Fruity Silcer on the 5 copied tracks:

1 witouth filter
2 with Low-Pass filter (which i automate to get a crazy wah-wah effect)
3 with Band-Pass filter
4 with Hi-Pass filter
5 with LP2 filter (cut all the way down for the Bassline)

Tip to make your Fruity Slicer louder is to put Maximus on it. Than turn the volume down on the sample to the point it doesn't distort anymore.

Do you play the 5 at the same time or at different times?

Yes, but i make change-ups through out the beat with them by dropping them in and out.
A lot of sample-based guys do this.

I always use the same settings on my filters though except for the SVF LP2 (Low-Pass) filter... i hit "Edit Events" on the ModX knob and make lines up & down, and set the ModY to 50%.

It takes a lot of time to do this and sometimes isn't even necessary.

This is how i do it but it does take a lot of time to do all this which a lot of times isn't even necessary to make a dope beat.
You got a link to your stuff, breh?
