How feasible would it be if say a northeastern democratic governor were a believer in classical economics cut taxes and spending and were for school voucher programs and kind of minded his or her business on social issues but didn't fight them if their state say pushed for gay marriage and drug legalization?

In other words a more libertarian democrat...would the electorate really hold it against them...the rabid base may but they are so small they really don't matter who really cares what democratic underground thinks
:yeshrug:

The media would call them great because no question i know the results will be great and they will be a top candidate for president due to results alone.

You see this is exactly what I would do...if i had to run as a republican i'd have to deal with all sorts of factions that would run me through a bunch of purity tests...i'd have to fight the media ready to sizzle my ass with any little gaffe...my base would be all over me to push issues like abortion and anti-gay rights when in reality its not even my call thats what judges deal with why should I pay it lip service? I'd have to balance out how to keep Rush Limbaugh and Karl Rove happy oh and I'd have to convince the electorate that i'm not some evil rich guy who likes to kick puppies in his spare time and that i'm not trying to keep poor people living in the gutter

If i was a fiscally conservative democrat I can have optimistic speeches about opportunity and rising from the bottom into prosperity...and I would probably kick the crap out of any Republican that ran against me...

"classic cut taxes and spending" <- got to come a little more nuanced than that. What spending cuts? What taxes?

Uncertain grounds
Actually it might even happen if the gop embraces libertarians more..the dems might too seeing them as the middle..the country could inadvertantly become libertarian thru battling for the middle..:ohlawd:

Maybe there is hope yet

What you're describing is not a Democrat, so no. You're looking for a way to allow a center-right Republican to escape his party's branding. Even BlueDog Democrats are socially conservative, but more fiscally "liberal" in many instances. The person you're describing could win governor in the Northeast, like Republicans often do, but would not win those state in a primary when met with a liberal or center-left individual. You just described Scott Brown.
