So I'm reading up on the issues that need to be resolved in order for the fiscal cliff to be avoided. I'm just getting into this political sphere so let me know if my understanding isn't correct.

Obama wants to push higher taxes on the rich (not renew Bush tax cuts for the rich people), but the Republicans don't agree with this. I understand the benefits of siding with Obama on this issue, but I don't know if I am seeing the downside. Republicans don't seem to be convincing me to side with them on this issue. Why are they against this?

I also see that the Republicans might sign off on it if they approve of entitlement reform. Do any of you think its a valid issue to hold out on? If so, just back up your opinion.

I just want to avoid any of the confrontational noise that seems to plague many discussions (not just discussions on the-coli).
