BA arts. Polisci/English double major. I wish there was a site out there that can show you job opportunities by degree. I'm having a tough time finding work as someone who doesn't have a lot of experience. I'll be looking at entry level jobs like "okay
" but then I see "2-5 years experience required"
It was hard for me to find work when I graduated too but these resources should be helpful to at least get your foot in the door.
Michigan State's Poli Sci department has a solid website with a lot of resources. It talks about possible careers for poli sci grads and it has links for a lot government jobs. You should definitely check it out:
What can I do with a major in Political Science?
Go to sites like
idealist or
Craigslist too. Idealist has a lot of postings for jobs, internships and volunteer experience that should be helpful. I've never used it but I know a few people who made connections there.
I've used Craigslist before and I had a few interviews with law firms from postings on there. It's a good resources but you've just to be careful. If it looks too good to be true, if their contact info looks sketchy, or they don't have a legit website/email then don't bother.
Check out websites of local nonprofits in your city (local Urban League, ACLU, AADP, etc). If there is a job posting on their site, apply ASAP. If not, send them an email and say you're interested in volunteering. Volunteer experience can make up for having a lack of professional experience in some situations.
Also, since you had a double major in English, you should check out this site:
https://www.odesk.com/o/jobs/browse/c/writing-translation/ It's basically a working from home site and people post a lot of contracting/freelance jobs that involve writing.
Good luck, breh. I know how frustrating it is when people turn you down for not having experience but you've just got to keep putting in applications. Keep grinding.
