Berwanger was requesting $15,000 and Halas' final offer was $13,500. Instead, he took a job with a Chicago rubber company and also became a part-time coach at his alma mater. Berwanger later expressed regret that he did not accept Halas' offer.

:why: Jay Berwanger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ... In 1936, $13,500 seems like a lot of money. If your leverage is working in a rubber company....

I can't knock him, back then baseball players often took jobs during the off-season to support them.
