The state of contemporary blockbusters means that movies are spending more money to make more money —it's either a billion dollars or bust. The middle ground at the box office is quickly evaporating, and no studio wants its big tentpole to amount to only modest success. Everything has to be an event, and that's why we're seeing the first look at "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" today, even though it's not coming out for two years.
Disney has dropped the first still from the movie that's currently in production, though it has had to pause as leading man Johnny Depp is recovering from an injury. Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (“Kon-Tiki”) are directing this latest swashbuckling entry in the franchise, with Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites, Golshifteh Farahani, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally and Stephen Graham along for the ride. Here's the official synopsis:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea...including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
POTC:DMTNT opens on July 7, 2017.
