Figured we could do a mid-year check on the movie year so far? I think the only notable entry I haven't been able to check out yet is The Witch, so you can put an asterisk on that one so far.

But for now the undisputed Top 5 is:

1. Mama :lawd:
2. Animal Politico :whoo:
3. A Bigger Splash :blessed:
4. The Neon Demon :lupe:
5. The Red Turtle :ohhh:

And honorable mentions to Love & Friendship, The Nice Guys and Captain America: Civil War (the only other three movies worth a 4/5).

Overall it's been a solid year, blockbuster season has been kinda drifting around aimlessly although low-key there was enough to keep me entertained throughout the summer, and there have been quite some movies that, while not necessarily being bad, didn't really measure up to the expectations/potential (Midnight Special, Les Innocentes, High-Rise and a very notable huge disappointment in Hail Caesar!).

There's a lot of stuff I still need to see (Neon Demon, The Wailing, Love & Friendship, Sunset Song, Hail Caesar, Wilderpeople)

anyway

1.) Green Room
2.) The Witch
3.) Take Me to the River
4.) OJ: Made in America (i'm counting it, fukk it)
5.) Hush
6.) The Invitation
7.) The Lobster
8.) Popstar
9.) The Nice Guys
10.) Louder Than Bombs

I agree with your disappointment on Midnight Special and High Rise. Both had a lot of redeeming qualities but they didn't totally click for me. Steps down for both Wheatley and Nichols.

edit: where did you see Red Turtle, Mama, and Animal Politico?

I know all the film Hipsters love it. And I really like the Blue Ruin. And I don't mean to sound like a p*ssy but all the violence didn't sit well with me with the current state of things. Granted I saw it last week as well. And it just didn't grab me from a story standpoint either

Fair enough. It's pretty shockingly brutal at times.

*reads synopsis of Green Room*

:ohhh::jbhmm::ehh:

edit: where did you see Red Turtle, Mama, and Animal Politico?

The Red Turtle came out here in arthouse theaters this week. I saw Mama and Animal Politico at the IFFR, there's like a 2% chance that either of those movies will get some kind of theatrical release so all I can say is, check the festival circuit and hope you get lucky. :russ:

@TheGodling

Are you talking about Ma Ma (with Penelope Cruz) or is there another "Mama"?

I just found out about that Penelope Cruz movie because of this post. I'm talking about Mama by Vlado Skafar. It's sorta like Tree Of Life except it makes Tree Of Life seem like Independence Day.:russ:

This year in film has been bad so far to me that I've barely gone out to watch films. If I didn't catch a free screening for it, I didn't bother, but I will say The Witch & The Lobster are the best movies I've seen. I still need to catch Zootopia & Green Room though.

In no particular order:

The Wailing (Goksung)
The Witch
The Fits
The Lobster
In the Shadow of Women
Krisha
Right Now, Wrong Then
Hail, Caesar!
Love & Friendship
Cemetery Of Splendour
O.J.: Made in America

Still quite a lot of films I've yet to see.

I think the year has been pretty weak so far but the highlights have been:

Everybody Wants Some!! (9/10)
Sing Street (8/10)
Wouldnt normally include 7/10's but this year:
Green Room (7/10)
Swiss Army Man (7/10)
The Witch (7/10)
The Nice Guys (7/10)

We get the Wailing and Wilderpeople here in the next few weeks, both of those look like they have potential.

I fall into the did not like category for Neon Demon :scust:

I think all the blockbusters have been :trash:

Favorite movies so far..

1. Neon Demon (Still thinking about this movie.:wow:)
2. Swiss Army Man (Didn't think I would like this film. How wrong I was)
3. The Nice Guys (They sent this flick out to die :snoop:)
4. Hardcore Henry (FPS action flick, you best believe I'm there:manny:)
5. The Witch (Not scary, but it did stick with me for a few weeks)
6. Zootopia (Usually not one for 3d kids flicks..but :wow:)
7. Huntsmen (Really just for Charlize)

Most of the flicks I've seen this year in the theater, have not be memorable.
