I’m just using the video as a jump off point. Movie scores are a thing of the past in my opinion.

There are good composers (Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Francis Ford Coppola, etc). They understand the importance of music in films and how it contributes to the overall experience.

Not being a hater on new films, just not seeing a score that jumps out and will stay in your consciousness like Superman, Star Wars, The Godfather, etc

But, Scorsese is a genius in the way he using songs as the backdrop. Quentin Tarantino owes his success to Scorsese in the respect

Hmm, there are plenty of great composers these days. I gotta disagree with scores not having their place today. Giacchino just put his best out in The Batman recently IMO and honestly, it felt like the greatest character in the film.

Morricone’s my GOAT though, I personally seek out films just to listen to them pieces of music.

Edit: Just finished watching that video. The shift from Brion to Greenwood in PTA’s films felt natural given how serious his later works became and they’re such a shift in style. I really like both composers and don’t regret how it all shook out, I just wish Brion would’ve came back to do Inherent Vice’s score. That felt like the perfect film for a reunion collab.

Still a lot of good stuff being made, a lot of it tends to lean less on tradition though imo. At least those are the the ones that stay with me. Not even talking like weirdo electronic stuff though I do love that shyt, but even the way Zimmer used drums in Man of Steel stands out.

Still goes:

As a composer myself only high-end, top level films (Aka Disney) get the gravitas of an actual accompanying soundtrack that actually matches the cues of the movie nearly note for note.

The Williams motif is a thing of the past due to composers being reliant on vsts (such as spitfire, zebra, and other plugins) rather than necessarily get an entire 50-70 piece orchestra to record for weeks or months on end to make an Empire Strikes Back type of score.

Additionally as composers, creating music for a specific cue depends on the scene. If it is changed due to poor production processes, the scene just falls apart. A good example of this was James Horner and James Cameron constantly fighting because Cameron kept switching out action sequences and James Horner couldn't keep up with writing cues for Aliens...Also the studio he was given was super old and he admitted only 80% of the soundtrack was achieved due to Cameron and production's problems.

It's worse today since the fil. production changes so quickly and rapidly, your traditional character melodies aren't created enough to be coherent enough through the film...

This change of scoring occured within the last 20 years...

Listen to a film today and something back from 2005, the cues for the most part match the scene specifically, not stock sounds directors can throw in there.

I think this movie score created the addiction to wanting to see adult r movies as a kid.

It maybe the goat.

Definitely as far as the music to some shyt you become entranced with as a kid and it never leaves you ever.

It is the movie i believe i discovered what sex was as a child....
Plus lust.
Including fulfilling desire.

It is a gateway to that feral human thing of lust and fulfilling desire. Even if you have to fight for it.
Maybe even heinously deceive to obtain that which you can not have.
Yet lustfully.
Fully desire.

It is another level.
as a gateway for me as a child.

To want to be an adult.

It is like the sound of what.
The coming of age of cognitive maturation would sound like for me.
