The other disturbing factor of this is that this was just shortly after Joker rapes and maims/paralyzes Batgirl, to which Batman had just hooked up with shortly before that.

its a really good batman story, but i learned later that its ending was contested for a long time

for the longest time, i thought that based on what the joker had put barbara and jim through. that batman had snapped while laughing and killed him. others have theorized that based on the the way the series begins and ends, that the killing joke is that nothing matters and the joker will do it again
