I remember this Xbox podcaster who would list his favorite games for the year, and his favorite game was a game that he only spent about 40 hours playing, yet he openly admitted to putting in close to 1000 hours playing another title that barely made his list. So can you say that Game A is your favorite game when you frequently pass it up to put 10x more hours into Game B? I believe your favorite game is the one you put the most time into. If you are bored, make a list of your top 5 favorite games for 2023, then go check your PSN/Xbox/Steam account and see which games you actually put the most time into and see how well it matches up. As the saying goes, "Don't listen to what people say, watch what they do.".

For me, some of my experiences I consider to be my "favorite" has been single player experiences, which i rarely ever spend more than 100 hours on. However PUBG has been pissing me off since early access and get I have 80 days and counting logged on that bullshyt :snoop: .

I can definitely see how somebody would have a ridiculous amount of time logged on a multiplayer game while still favoring a single player one with less time put in.

Yeah, easily. Most of my absolute favorite games are single player games, to which due to time, age, responsibilities and interest in other games, I rarely replay them. By default, your average multi-player game lends themselves to longer time periods of play because it's just playing for competition/co-operation, with no actual end game in sight. You just play them as long as they're hot for and you have people you want to play with. That said, only a select few of those end up being my absolute favorite game of a generation, usually relegated to just one of them really.

When I was a kid, with less games to play and/or resources to obtain them, I replayed my favorite games more often because of that limited selection, but more abundance of free time. Also, games were a lot shorter back then on average, so you could replay a game in day to completion.

Yep. Its almost the same argument for tv series and movies.

I probably watched some shytty movie like Weekend at Bernies 100x’s because it was always on tv growing up but watched something like The Raid, twice.

I get that people will spend more time in multi-player games, but I see it also in single player sports titles. I got bro-in-law who would never admit that NCAA Football 2016 is his favorite game, but he's been logging in hours a week into it since it released.

I bought Metro Exodus on Xbox, Epic, and Steam. I've beaten the game at least 4 times. I can name other single player games that I've logged hundreds of hours into. I just can't justify saying a "One and Done" game experience meets the requirements of being a "Favorite" when I actively pass it up to play another game I've already beaten.

I’ve been playing Destiny since D1 beta and it wouldn’t crack my top 10 games.

Love the game but outside a few raids and maybe some pvp experiences there’s nothing that would match the experience I had playing something like FF6 or Super Metroid

Interesting debate.

I kinda agree with OP.

For example i absolutely LOVED my time with Armored Core 6. Was as close to a perfect game for me as possible. My every moment with that game was pure joy. Can’t even think of a criticism other than the fact i want more.

Starfield has had plenty of hiccups, confusion, and things i didn’t necessarily enjoy, but i’ve already doubled the time i spent with AC and will probably play starfield for another 50-100 hours before i’m done.

As much as i love AC6 i can’t call it my favorite game this year, just cause starfield had given me so much more to play with.

Sounds like you value duration over quality then. Which is something plenty of gamers seem to be like this day in age. Which is funny, considering that gamers these days also tend to complain a lot about gaming bloat, etc and question why do developers push all this extra stuff in games these days.

I mean we all do it to enjoy ourselves and pass time. I gotta vote for the thing that gives me more enjoyment over the other :manny:

I don't think time spent on a game means it was more enjoyable than a shorter game. A game can be long as hell and entertaining enough to complete it, but still not be among your favorite games.

One of my favorite games ever is super metroid, which is a pretty short game. Compare it to something like fallout 4 where I spent atleast 100 hours in and I feel like that game is mid.

Also another favorite example I have is Dragon Quest XI. Probably the most boring game I’ve put over 100 hours in

Exactly. My favorite movie of all time is less than two hours and made in an age when that was normal. Giving me more scenes for more runtime alone isn't going to make 'X' movie that much more enjoyable. Especially if the extra scenes are fluff. It usually detracts from the overall enjoyment, if that's the case. Same applies with games. Music too. Greatest hip-hop album is under 30 minutes long.

Same wth TV shows. Supernatural would've been pitch perfect if it ended at season 5. Instead, it went on for 10 more years and all the rest of that was just...bleh.
