A North Carolina father gave up on life after a nasty custody battle with his son’s mother, according to friends. Derek Walker, 26, was shot and killed by police during a standoff after he lost custody of his kids.
Durham police were called to Walker’s home on Monday after reports of a distraught man brandishing a gun, according to local affiliate WNCN. Police attempted to negotiate with the man for about an hour before he turned his gun on police, causing them to fire at him.
According to police, Walker was suicidal and crying at times during his conversations with police.
Prior to the incident, Walker wrote the following on his Facebook page:

After the post, friends tried to reach out to Walker, but to no avail.
“He was a father who had been dealing with a nasty custody battle within the court system,” friend Truitt O’Neal said. “He was extremely and emotionally drained.”
