Russia has vast access to mineral resources, is the main point of energy for Western Europe, and borders with the 2nd largest economy in the world, and has a strong military. Russia could give a f*ck about a sanction If energy wasn't traded in dollars they probably wouldn't even be negotiating right now.

The Russian economy doesn't seem any more screwed than it has been for a while now. The slide reflects certain structural elements of the Russian economy that were present before the Crimean nonsense began.
