John Kerry has taken on Edward Snowden's latest claims—that the NSA has bugged EU offices and spied on computer networks. Though Kerry said he didn't know whether the assertions were true, he added, "All I know is that is not unusual for lots of nations," the BBC reports. "Every country in the world that is engaged in international affairs of national security undertakes lots of activities to protect its national security, and all kinds of information contributes to that." That's little consolation to European leaders who are reacting to the story, Reuters reports.

If it's true, "we will clearly say that bugging friends is unacceptable," says German chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman. "We are no longer in the Cold War." The Wall Street Journal notes that Merkel's government this morning summoned the US ambassador for clarification, while the BBC adds that French President Francois Hollande is demanding the US "immediately stop." Germany, according to der Spiegel, is among the most heavily watched by the NSA, while France and Italy face far less monitoring. Spiegel offers a table revealing the extent of the practice: An average day in December saw the agency taking metadata from 15 million phone connections and 10 million Internet data sets. "I was always sure that dictatorships, some authoritarian systems, tried to listen," says EU Parliament president Martin Schulz, per Reuters. "But that measures like that are now practiced by an ally, by a friend, that is shocking."

Basically Wayne Madsen did an interview with the Guardian restating information that is already known (but not WELL KNOWN), saying that Europe spies on the U.S. and even Canada and New Zealand and Australia, and vice versa. They knowingly spy on each other and then share the information if need be with the other country, so domestically they can claim they don't spy on their own citizens. The article was posted on the Guardian, then taken down, and then Google took it out of their cache completely, in less than 24 hours.

The Guardian Revealed An NSA 'Scoop' Then Deleted It From The Website

Paul SzoldraJun. 29, 2013, 8:51 PM

The Guardian released another shocking NSA scoop on Saturday, revealing collusion and mass harvesting of personal communications among the United States and at least six European Union countries — only to delete it from their website hours after publication.

The article, titled "Revealed: secret European deals to hand over private data to America," was written by Jamie Doward, who reported information from Wayne Madsen, a former Navy Lt. and NSA employee for 12 years.
Doward wrote:

Madsen said the countries had "formal second and third party status" under signal intelligence (sigint) agreements that compels them to hand over data, including mobile phone and internet information to the NSA if requested.

Under international intelligence agreements, confirmed by declassified documents, nations are categorised by the US according to their trust level. The US is first party while the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand enjoy second party relationships. Germany and France have third party relationships.

He went on to say that seven European countries and the U.S. have access to a fiberoptic cable network, intercepting phone calls, emails, and user logs from websites. The article describes Madsen as having "been attacked for holding controversial views on espionage issues."

That's a light way of putting it.

Some of Madsen's controversial views include the belief that President Obama is secretly a homosexual and that the Boston bombing suspects were government agents. He's also reported on a "former CIA agent" alleging the 2000 USS Cole bombing was perpetrated not by al Qaeda terrorists, but by a missile fired from an Israeli submarine.

yup - Echelon, probably minus the ''need be'' in some cases. there's a History channel program on it from '06. this brilliant method goes back to ww2.

and europe erupted before but kerry makes a point many have made with this recent stuff - old as the hills.

No what is it.

Our German friends, along with our European friends, as well as our American friends (your friend included) thought that Mr. Obama would reverse or put a stop to a lot of Mr. Bush's criminal behavior. Our German friends are seen here cheering by the hundreds of thousands for then Senator Obama.

Well friend, it turns out that under our German friends have been getting shafted by their friend the US, by not only having their officials wiretapped, by their citizens as well.
