I've recently got put onto Ethiopiques by Eritrean friend. The binge listening has been delightful. Basically a whole buncha Ethiopian/Eritrean musicians/singers making a lot of dope music. There's a big African American influence on the music so its not too foreign that its strange, still has the tradional flavouring to make it different yknow. I wish the singers could have some type of control and not just belt off key but thats my only minor gripe about the music. This thread is here to share these unearthed gems and discussions of the stylings b and most of all to introduce new listeners to this goodness. A lot of this stuff got hit by an automatic stop when the communist regime came through and it'd be nice to respark an interest in these jams

My personal favourites:
Tesfa-Maryam Kidane - "Yetesfa Tezeta"
[Ethio-Funk]

Mulatu Astatke - "Yèkèrmo Sèw (A Man of Experience and Wisdom)" [ Ethio-Jazz]

Bahta Gebre-Heywet - "Tessassategn Eko"
[Ethio-Rhythm and Blues/soul ]
