What do you think a fix would be for this situation
A email host that isn't as bound to hand over your personal information.
I'm guessing there must be a few left the US hasn't sunk their teeth into or that are protected by more privacy that aren't US companies.

tl;dr - Calm down. Nobody really cares about your e-mail.
Hushmail is a step above, BUT... like any other free e-mail provider they will hand over your account if they are compelled to via a subpena being served to them. The only thing Google and Yahoo are doing is trying to sell you shyt. Nothing more, nothing less.
Beyond that is setting up a mail server of your own, using PGP, and using a different system other than the certificate authorities.
Also, can you provide some links on what you were reading?
